Hurricane Preparedness

— Written By Donna Hanusik

A good rule of thumb with any potential disaster is to hope for the best, but plan for the worst. There are several resources to help.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has prepared two outstanding resources on preparing for hurricanes and floods. NC Extension Specialists have developed a simple Hurricane Preparedness factsheet to help you prepare your home, family and property. Be sure to review these prior to the event.

Many families will choose to shelter in place. If it is safe to remain at home, be sure to prepare a disaster kit. A list of necessary items and helpful tips can be found in this factsheet from NC State Extension. If it becomes desirable or necessary to evacuate, NC Extension Specialists have prepared safety tips to remember during an evacuation.

For additional information or access to printed copies of any of the above-mentioned materials contact the Dare County Center of N.C. Cooperative Extension at 252-473-4290.
