Through her personal and professional journey, Margie has realized that food choices should not be complicated or stressful. Food should provide pleasure and nourishment for the body and spirit. That’s why Margie works to:

  1. Promote purchasing from local food producers for fresh, flavorful food and beverage choices and development of community.
  2. Help people develop cooking and food preservation skills by offering hands-on cooking classes, demonstrations, instructional videos and tested recipes.

Developing any skill-set requires time and perseverance. But being able to prepare your own fresh, fabulous tasting and nourishing food to share is definitely worth the investment.

Extension Master Food Volunteer 2024 Applications – NOW OPEN!

Extension Master Food Volunteer Application

Please email questions or completed application to Margie Mansure at margie_mansure@ncsu.edu by April 8th, 2024

Do you enjoy cooking, learning about nutrition and health, or local food system work?

Are you a responsible person who likes to work with others? If so, the Extension Master Food Volunteer program may be a perfect opportunity! The 2024 application for this program is now open to Watauga and Caldwell residents. The application deadline is April 8th.

The Extension Master Food Volunteer program, modeled after the Extension Master Gardener Volunteer program, is designed to provide volunteers the opportunity to support Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) extension agents with food-related programming. Volunteers will receive a core curriculum of 30 hours of training which includes field trips, and will then shadow/assist the extension agent for 30 hours during their first year.

Food-related programming activities may include assisting with cooking classes, conducting food demonstrations in the community, serving on the Watauga Food Council, volunteering at the donation station at the Watauga farmers’ market, volunteering at the high country food hub, teaching nutrition/gardening lessons at childcare centers, and others.

There will be a fee for the class to cover expenses: food for demonstrations, cooking lunch together and field trips, to be determined.

Training Dates: Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

4/23, 4/30, 5/7, 5/14, 5/21, 5/28
