N.C. Cooperative Extension, Forsyth County Center is located at 1450 Fairchild Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. Visit Our Gardens
In Forsyth County, Extension maintains two public garden spaces, the Demonstration Garden and the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park. We invite you to visit when you are able. Our what’s in bloom page showcases what is blooming seasonally.
Soil Testing
We recommend soil testing for almost any garden, yard, or farm. A soil test report provides information on your soil pH and nutrient levels. Soil testing kits can be picked up at our office and mailed to the NC Department of Agriculture for analysis. Read this article for details on how to get a kit and complete a soil test. The fee for a soil test varies throughout the year and it is free at certain times of the year.
Pollinator Gardening
You can grow a pollinator garden at home to support butterflies, bees, and other pollinators. This article on native plants for bees and other pollinators provides a good starting point and resources to investigate when planning a pollinator garden in North Carolina. Lawncare in Central North Carolina
In Central North Carolina, your lawn may be composed of cool-season or warm-season turfgrass. Visit our page on lawns and lawn alternatives for a variety of helpful resources to answer your questions about lawncare! A great publication to get you started with home lawncare is Carolina Lawns: A Guide to Maintaining Quality Turf in the Landscape.
Composting
Backyard composting is a great way to use yard trimming, kitchen scraps, and other organic waste and turn it into an amendment for your garden. In addition to improving garden soil when added as an amendment, composting is a great way to reduce the amount of waste you put into the landfill. Check out NC State’s Composting Portal for lots of information on composting. A couple publications to help you with composting are:
Vegetable Gardening

The Forsyth County Extension Master Gardener℠ Volunteer Program
The Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program was developed to help expand the reach of Extension’s horticulture program. In Forsyth County, Extension Master Gardener Volunteers help plan and deliver educational classes, including our Forks on Friday and Arboretum Adult Education series. Volunteers also help maintain our Demonstration Garden and the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park.
