Collapse ▲Winter Blooming Azaleas
Deciduous azaleas lose their leaves in the fall, whereas evergreen azaleas retain most of their foliage through the winter. Their delicate flowers are stunning in colors of white, purple, bronze, red, and pink.
Preparation of azaleas for winter:
Keep in mind that azaleas perform best in Zones 4 – 9.
Good drainage is important in summer and winter.
Utilize good quality soil which will hold moisture until the spring. A loamy topsoil with a pH level of acidity between 5 and 8.2 is recommended.
Provide filtered sun rather than direct sun and deep shade.
Reduce watering by one-third in the autumn months. This will toughen the azalea for the winter. Water after the first, second, and third frost. Soaking the roots of the plants will hydrate them and keep them from drying out.
Do not fertilize after midsummer.
In winter, chop up mulch and place around the base of the plant, being careful not to smother it. Do not mulch around the trunk of the azalea as this can cause moisture damage.
Encore azaleas retain their foliage year-round and depending on the type, will bloom
year-round as well.
