NC State Extension Master Gardener Dare County

Calling all gardeners who wish to become a Master Gardener℠ Volunteer! We will be offering a new Master Gardener Training in the fall of 2024.

You don’t have to be a gardening expert to apply! In fact, the only requirement is that you have an interest in learning about gardening and share what you learn with others.

What is a Master Gardener℠? Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who provide educational assistance and programming to Dare County citizens on a wide variety of subjects such as lawns, fruits, vegetables, trees, and ornamentals. All that is necessary to be a Master Gardener is a commitment to learn about gardening and serve as a volunteer.

How do I apply to the Dare County Master Gardener Program? Applications are accepted all year, with a deadline for the current year’s class on June 1, 2024. Review of applications and interviews of candidates will take place in July with classes beginning in September.

Download your EMGV Application for the Dare County Master Gardener Program. Applications may be mailed or brought to the N.C. Cooperative Extension Center at 517 Budleigh Street, P.O.Box 968, Manteo, NC 27954. You may also email your application to Tanya Lamo, tanya_lamo@ncsu.edu. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. The deadline for applications is June 1, 2024.

Is there a fee? The cost for the program is $150 per person, which is due once you have been accepted into the program.

How do I become a Master Gardener? Becoming a Master Gardener is a two-part process: training and then a volunteer internship.

Forty hours of training are required and learning sessions include lectures, hands-on activities, field trips, and guest speakers.

You will receive thorough training in the areas of botany, soils, insects, diseases, landscape plants, vegetables, fruit, lawns, flowers, and landscape design. Upon completion of the training and achieving a passing score on a written, take-home exam, you will begin a 40-hour volunteer internship that must be completed by November. You will be encouraged, supported, and mentored throughout the process, joining the ranks of Dare County’s Certified Master Gardeners in a graduation celebration surrounded by your fellow Master Gardeners!

Master Gardener training will:

  • increase your knowledge of horticulture,
  • give you the skills to help people with their gardening problems,
  • provide a meaningful way for you to contribute to your community,
  • increase your confidence, and
  • introduce you to a whole new group of folks who share your love of gardening, plants, and volunteering.
